Una Biological Reserve

Golden-headed Lion Tamarin

The Biological Reserve of Una is one of the best preserved areas of Southern Bahia. The reserve’s 11,400 hectares of forest harbour several threatened animal species, such as the Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin, the Yellow-Breasted Capuchin monkey, and the maned three-toed sloth. The forest remnants surrounding the reserve, which are linked to it through cacao plantations and other forest patches, play an important role in the conservation of this area by forming habitat corridors.

According to a study carried out by the New York Botanical Garden in 1993, the Atlantic Rainforest in South Bahia is one of the worlds richest in terms of biodiversity. 456 different species of trees have been identified in a single hectare (100 x 100 m) of which 54,8% are endemic.
