The End of Suburbia... Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream

A subject that has not seen a great deal of publicity in the mainstream media until recently is the concept of Peak Oil. This well produced 52-minute documentary covers not only the concept of Peak Oil, but also attempts to predict some of the drastic social and lifestyle changes in the case that the World’s oils production has ‘peaked’ and starts sliding down the back side of the ‘Hubbard Peak’ compared to the spiralling demand for energy moving into the future. The Hubbard curb, coined in 1956 a the leading oil-industry geologist, Mr M.K. Hubbard, accurately predicted the production peak of the US oil production for 1970/71 and went on to predict a World oil peak around 2010. While there is some debate from some areas (not so surprising, many of these closely associated with the petro-chemical industry), the list and credentials of the interviewee’s in this documentary are both impressive and from a wide spectrum. The prediction for the imminent arrival of Peak Oil, the sobering estimate of a 30-year technological shadow in the development of real alternatives, and the effect from farming and food production right through to the living structures. Well worth a look.
