A new Gallery feature has just been introduced to the Breathe Foundation site already featuring nine albums from the Breathe/Respira Brazil event have been uploaded. At this point due to slow internet times and frequent rainstorms in the area often blowing the internet connection, the Gallery section is a teaser for what is to come with over 3,000 images still to sort through and upload.

Already online:

Arriving in Itacare three days prior to the event, German opening concert headliners, Jamaram took every opportunity to get involved with local people. Traveling the 40 minutes from Itacare to the remote and isolated Tremembé, the sound crew were dropped off while the band checked out an incredible waterfall tucked away in the middle of primary Atlantic Rain Forest. Tremembé, a very poor rural village with only dirt roads and Cacao drying in front of every house, were then treated to an impromptu surprise semi-acoustic performance by the band in the centre of the village that brought the entire town out. Almost 100 kids were dancing to Jamaram stylee, when a Capoera crew appeared out of no where and started a dance in the middle of the crowd. Lead singer Tom left the mike to join in with the tribe while the band took over vocals. The night ended, when the Mayor of Tremembé also appeared out of no where, took the mike and thanked the band on behalf of the whole town. It was one of the most moving experiences of the whole Breathe/Respira Brazil event, even if it was two days before it's official start.

On the 5th day of Breathe Festival the participants have been taken by Chris Bachmann and Nicolas Mueller, President of the Breathe Foundation to plant trees. Nicolas Mueller, professional snowboarder, explained the efforts of ARFI, the Atlantic Rainforest Institution: “Only 7% of the original size of the rainforest are remaining and the ARFI Institute is protecting a corridor along the coast. Planting trees in this area together here with friends and everybody from the Breathe Festival is really cool.” AFRI, with support from the Breathe Foundation, The Association for Conservation and Swatch are constructing an Institution House at the school for the dual purpose of making it available to students during the day, farmers instructional seminars during the night and administration of the AFARI reforestation project.

On the occasion of the festival, the European skateboard company “Crème” is donating a skate bowl to the community of Itacaré. Designed by Stefan Hauser and build under Max Häring’s commands, the inauguration ceremony of the bowl was on May 19th 2010. Fifty skateboards and equipments will also be on the disposal of the kids in exchange of good school results, social work or ecological awareness. This is some of the start of the construction. More to come of the completed work.

The Breathe/Respira Brazil office is set at the second floor of the art gallery « Galeria 195 » held by the lovely couple Beto and Rosi. It formed the central location of the event.        www.galeria195.com

Arriving in Itacaré, we discovered that the hospital urgently needed some restoration. We stimulated the whole community to help on the building site. Starting at 5am, 90m² of concrete was laid on the hospital roof with the help of 30 volunteers, finishing the work by 9am.

The Breathe/Respira Brazil festival is taking place in Itacaré, Bahia, a little town surrounded by the Altantic Rainforest and the ocean.
