During the Wednesday Workshops on water awareness following the Beach Combing activity patron-ed by Nic Mueller, one of the best documentaries we have found addressing local water issues, “Neuestas Agua, Neuestas Vida” will be screened. Produced locally by an internationally recognized organization, CAVU, it presents real water issues from a local point of view. Uncontrolled development has resulted in a devastating depletion of natural water resources, river flows, availability, quality and integrity.
As part of the water day, CAVU’s documentary highlights these issues by giving the local and indigenous population a platform and a voice. Instead of an endless steam of highly qualified scientists, it tackles the issue from the bottom up, allowing long term locals who have lived through the rapid deterioration of the water situation. Ending in an electrically charged town meeting where local people call bullshit on dubious actions from developers and what appears to be a compliant local government.
An outstanding documentary, CAVU’s programs don’t stop simply there. A description of themselves from their web site:
“CAVU is dedicated to educating and engaging stakeholders about natural resource management throughout the Americas. Using the power of flight, the medium of film and the transformative nature of education, CAVU brings diverse societies a new perspective on the fragility and scarcity of their land and resources.
At CAVU we are pilots, filmmakers, conservationists and educators whose work involves local leaders, policy makers, biologists, entrepreneurs, activists and many others. CAVU inspires conservation action by empowering communities with information from the economic, social and physical sciences. When people are informed and engaged, healthy societies and renewable natural resources thrive."
CAVU’s collaborative programs effect conservation action on the ground. The Flight Program brings to our passengers an important and entirely new perspective on their land and its resources. The Education Program provides innovative tools for a broad range of citizens and organizations. Ongoing Outreach Campaigns utilize flight, film and education in local campaigns, allowing stakeholders to tell their own story. Together, CAVU’s unique tools help communities take action and properly manage their watersheds, marine sanctuaries, biological corridors and rainforests for generations to come. CAVU gives individuals the opportunity to meet on a level playing field, and a voice to those who might otherwise not be heard.”
Well worth a check out, practical and effective, hands on action. The way it should be...
