Some of the happenings at Breathe Costa Rica

The program for the event in Itacaré, Brazil, 15th - 25th of May released. The second of the Breathe Foundation events, Breathe/Respira Brazil, to be held in Itacaré, Bahia State, over the 15th - 25th of May has finally released it's Provisional Program and opened the booking system for interested participants.

A 10 day event held in the sleepy backwaters surrounded by the highly endangered Atlantic Rainforest, Breathe/Respira Brazil fuses ecology, sport, music, art, workshops, wellness and direct action projects into a life expanding experience.

With three months to go almost to the day, the Breathe/Respira Brazil Program has been a slow labor of love to put together. Time differences, lost in translation challenges and a small organization crew have made it a slow but effective process to unite the local organizations and enlist international participation, but finally the Provisional Program is live. Although subject to changes, mainly in terms of confirmation of certain participants, it is a good overview of what will be on offer for those who make the trip to the Bahia State, Brazil.

Located approximately five hours South of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, Itacaré sits in the Atlantic Rain-forest recognized by UNESCO as one of the five biodiversity hot-spots on the planet. Through logging, agriculture and population encroachment, it has been reduced to approximately 7% of it's original size. The remaining forest and the huge number of endemic fauna and flora species it supports is under continued threat from logging, poaching, multi-national farming companies and a growing local population.

Several lessons have been learnt from the inaugrial breathe event, Breathe Costa Rica, which was held in February, 2009, on the Nicoya Peninsula around the Santa Teresa area, that resulted in the then seven day event be extended to ten. In keeping with the holistic approach employed there, Breathe/Respira Brazil will again fuse art, music, sport, workshops, field trips, seminars, documentary screenings and direct action activities, but has given more space to fit everything in. In particular, in this outing, more emphasis has been given to highlight the five separate workshops discussing a broad range of issues that feature in the program roughly once every two days.

Another change from last year is the publishing of stated Direct Action Objectives for the event that are designed to work with local organization to tackle significant regional issues. The Breathe/Respira Brazil event creates a platform for discussion of global issues, working with the backdrop of local examples to emphasize the critical need to address the greater problems.

Breathe Events challenge people to leave their regular surroundings and to re-immerse themselves with a isolated, vibrant, living, ecosystem. A chance to take direct action with organizations on the ground. A chance to stop for a second, take a deep breath, to interact and re-examine our place on the planet from a completely different perspective. Put simply, Breathe events offer a unique experience with like-minded people interested and working for change...
