Itacaré is located on the south coast of Bahia State belonging to what is called the "Cocoa Coast", bordering the municipalities of Maraú, Aurelino Leal, Ubaitaba, Uruçuca, Ilhéus and the Atlantic Ocean. Approximately a 5 hour drive south from the Bahia State Capital, Salvador, or 65 km drive north from the regional centre of Ilhéus, it is . It is inside the tropical zone with an avarage temperature of 27º C (80º F). A mixture of races - Indians, blacks and whites - that created the Brazilian people can be seen in the features of the natives called "nação grapiúna" which is what Jorge Amado affectionately called "the captivating people of this land". Once in the centre of the Cocoa production, the town's economy now revolves mainly around Tourism based on surfing and eco projects. Environmentally Protected Area (APA) Itacaré - Serra Grande, created in 1993 by the State Government of Bahia, has, as its objective, to protect the rich natural heritage of the region and to encourage the balanced use of natural resources. APA Itacaré - Serra Grande has about 40,000 acres and occupies a coastal strip of approximately 4 miles in width and 17 miles in length, bordered in the north by the mouth of the Contas River, in the south by Sargi Creek and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Getting there:
The best arrival destination is Salvador, the state Capital of Bahia State, Brazil. Direct flights from Europe and the North America, most European flights arrive late evening (23:15) which may mean and overnight stay in Salvador. Our recommendation for accommodation is the Bahia Surf Camp (www.bahiasurfcamp.com) which is located within 20 minutes of the airport and can provide pick up. Direct flights out of North America arrive generally early (06:20) and generally would not require an overnight stay.
A Breathe/Respira Brazil bus will leave to from the Bahia Surf Camp at 12:00 driving directly to Itacaré on Saturday 15th of May for participants.
Flights to Ilhéus from Salvador take 20 minutes and are available daily on TAM and GOL airlines, flight time takes approximately 20 minutes. Buses from the Ilhéus or hire cars are available at the airport for the 65 km trip north to Itacaré.
Getting Around on site:
Buses to and from Breathe/Respira organised activities will be provided during the event to shuttle participants to different functions. Several of the best surfing beaches and different points of interest are within 10 – 15 minutes drive from downtown. Taxi's or hire motorbikes are available in town.
