Itacaré - Serra Grande

Environmentally Protected Area (APA) Itacaré - Serra Grande, created in 1993 by the State Government of Bahia, has, as its objective, to protect the rich natural heritage of the region and to encourage the balanced use of natural resources.

WHAT IS AN "APA" ?

APA (Area de Proteção Ambiental = Environmentally Protected Area) is a category of conservation units of the National System of Conservation Units, like the National Parks, Biological Reserves, Extractive Marine Reserves and others, yet, with its own characteristics.

APA Itacaré - Serra Grande has about 40,000 acres and occupies a coastal strip of approximately 4 miles in width and 17 miles in length, bordered in the north by the mouth of the Contas River, in the south by Sargi Creek and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
